Environmental Protection

BLACKHALL takes a holistic view of the impact of its activities on the environment and manages its operations in accordance with International Standard for Environmental Management Systems ISO 14001. The company continually strives to improve its environmental performance both locally and globally direct through its operations and indirectly through its supply chain. The management system ensures improvements in environmental performance with setting and monitoring key environmental objectives and targets.

BLACKHALL design and manufacture valves that protect the environment by sealing piping systems and preventing harmful liquids, precious water and gases from escaping. To minimise the impact from the product life cycle, ALL products are designed to be repaired. This maximises the possibility of re-use, recovery and recycling of materials. BLACKHALL products have saved millions of gallons of water EACH YEAR and in so doing large amounts of industrial energy in the past decade by adopting a 'best practice' design philosophy, and striving continually to integrate 'cutting edge' technology into products.

Environmental initiatives include:

  • Conducting energy efficiency audits and improvements in line with the Action for Energy initiative (part of the governments Environmental Best Practice Programme).
  • An ongoing waste minimisation programme with targets to minimise use of materials and maximise re-use, recovery and recycling of waste.
  • Eliminating the risk of a pollution incident through best practice liquid and waste handling and management techniques. These techniques include emergency response teams and equipment such as surface water drain isolation valves.
  • Improving the appearance of its premises and instilling exceptional housekeeping practices.
  • Procurement of near final shape raw material to reduce machine power consumption and scrap metal waste.
  • Introducing a strategy that aims to influence and encourage its supply chain in operational management that will achieve a positive impact on society and the environment
  • Managing charitable donations including collection of employees' old clothes, donation of IT equipment, recycling of Christmas cards and re-use of mailing envelopes.
