Blackhall Engineering secures contract for Neom Green Hydrogen Technology project

Blackhall Engineering secures contract for Neom Green Hydrogen Technology project

An exciting start to 2023 for Blackhall Engineering begins with our contract with NEOM, a futuristic city currently under construction in the Tabuk Province of Saudi Arabia.

What is NEOM?

NEOM is the game-changing brainchild of NGHC (Neom Green Hydrogen Company). Their work in establishing a green-hydrogen-based ammonia production facility, run on renewable energy, is the largest in the world to date. The mega plant will produce up to 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen in the form of green-ammonia, as a cost-effective solution for transportation across the globe. By producing and exporting green ammonia to global markets, this project will save the world almost five million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, compared to diesel trucks or buses that are currently in use on our roads.

This is where we come in, as Blackhall has secured the contract to supply our world-renowned diverter valves. These diverter valves will play a crucial role in ensuring safe handling and efficient flow of Liquid Nitrogen, which will further be used in the production of ammonia with hydrogen.

What is green hydrogen?

In a bid to understand this more, let's explore what the term 'green hydrogen' really means. Hydrogen itself is a natural gas, an alternative to methane, and in its cleanest form is produced with no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, it's made using clean electricity from surplus renewable energy sources, like solar or wind power, to electrolyse water. At present, green hydrogen makes up a small percentage of UK energy, because the production is so expensive. With this in mind, it's remarkable that NEOM is aiming to be the world's first international community of free-thinkers, living and working in a Kingdom that is focussed on providing a space for green energy to take centre stage. Their zero-carbon initiative is a road map for countries, cities and communities worldwide to take note of.

Where do we come in?

The valves that Blackhall will be supplying are to be used in a region called The Line. A linear smart city running for 170-kilometres and just 200 metres wide, will eventually accommodate nine million people and will be built on a footprint of just 34 square kilometres. No roads, cars or emissions will pollute this paradise, and it will run on 100% renewable energy. By choosing The Line as the home for the NEOM green-hydrogen-based ammonia production facility, it will fall in line with the concept of producing nothing but clean energy. This will feed the city, as well as fuel transportation for the surrounding regions and the wider world.

Championing a greener future

This shift into clean energy is what Blackhall is eager to be a part of, with the end goal of creating a greener planet through the discovery, use and distribution of clean, renewable energy solutions. By investing our time and resources into the hydrogen economy we can play an active role in helping companies like NEOM pave the way in clean energy. Our valvologists have been hard at work designing this new hydrogen valve to ensure it is ready to be shipped to NEOM imminently so they can begin production. This is an exciting leap forward in sustainable, revolutionary urban living that we are proud to be a part of.
